Mission

Latin American Centre for Development an Participatory (CDESCO) mission is sustainable and participatory development promotion, with emphasis on the rural and marginalized areas.

CDESCO promotes an intervention strategy in communities and groups through participatory methodologies based on the use of audio-visual tools for sharing knowledge with illiterate and the multilingual population.

Massive Audiovisual Pedagogy was developed by Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO) of the United Nations in the 70’s.
It was leaded by Manuel Calvelo Rios(Photo), a former FAO expert who contributed to building capacity in several countries.

Forged in the FAO Latin American experience, CDESCO is a Latin American Centre that has become the latin american central locus of communication for participatory planning activities a focal point for a growing movement of consultants and participatory development practitioners who honestly want to go beyond the rhetorics.

From 1998 to 2003 CDESCO members organized the first latin american Communication for Development graduate carrer, directed by Calvelo and Co-directed by Fernando Korstanje, CDESCO president (Photo)

CDESCO core activities include:

• Diagnosis, design, execution, administration, monitoring and evaluation of development projects.

• Peasants and Technicians training and expert consultancies.

• Formation and improvement of technicians and promoters in communication for the development: Like producers of pedagogical materials for the training and like trainers.

• Design and beginning of systems, instruments, processes and methodologies of information and communication for the development, scientific, cultural communication, institutional and communitarian communication, etc.

• Investigation in participatory methodologies of development, models of education and qualification and production of educative messages, including the analysis and evaluation of new technologies.

• Production of informative messages for the massive qualification in radial, audio-visual, electronic formats (Internet) written and multimedial,

• Production of documentary of social, cultural and artistic interest.

Background

The CDESCO personnel has served in institutions like the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations(FAO), World Bank, United Nation Development Programm(UNDP), Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture(IICA), Japan International Cooperation Agency(JICA), Salvadoran Foundation for Social and Economic Development(FUSADES), Ministry of Agriculture of Mexico, National Institute of Farming Technology(INTA), Administration of National Parks, Government of Mexico, Government of Argentina, Federal Advice of Investments, Cooperation of the Basque Government, Ministry of Social Development of the Nation among others.

Taller de Planeación Participativa en Los Almendros, Suchitoto, El Salvador C.A.From 1998 to 2003, they developed the curriculum for the Specialization of Postgraduate in Communication for the Development in the National University of Tucumán, unique supply in its type in Latin America.

As international consulting they have served the FAO in nearly all Latin American countries such as Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Honduras, Guatemala, Bolivia, Chile, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Colombia and El Salvador.

Recently they have directed, designed and put in place the strategy of communication for the rural development in the Govermment of Mexico where they had to produced the Pedagogical Audiovisual Training Set “Participatory Planning”.

CDESCO dictates, frequently semester, Participatory Planning Training of Trainiers’ Workshop.

In the Workshop, Japanese Voluntaries (JOCV/JICA) originating of El Salvador Costa Rica and Ecuador have become qualified, as well a Colombian scholarship holder, a Basque cooperator and technicians of the National Institute of Farming Technology (INTA), among others.
